North Country Chapter: 95 Years of Service - 1916 - 2010
The North Country Chapter of the American Red Cross:
- Was chartered by the National Red Cross as the Clinton County Chapter in 1916 through the work of Ada Rogers in Ausable Folks, New York. We later joined other local Red Cross Chapters’ to form our current service area.
- Serves a population of 160,000 in a 3,439 square mile area consisting of Clinton, Franklin Counties and 13 Northern Townships of Essex County and Piercefield in St. Lawrence County.
- Responds, on average, to 40 local disasters per year, primarily individual house fires, affecting over 140 people. When disaster strikes, our volunteer teams respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing shelter, food, clothing, medical supplies, clean up kits, mental health support and other needed items. All disaster assistance provided by the Red Cross is free of charge made possible by the generosity of the American people.
- Trains over 7,390 individuals to save lives through 840 courses in CPR, first aid, water safety, use of automated external defibrillators, child care, pet first aid, care giving and more annually.
- Prepares more than 476 individuals yearly in Disaster Preparedness. Through this free educational initiative, the Red Cross gives information to individuals, families, and organizations on basic steps to take to prepare for emergencies.
- Connects over 68 local military families annually during critical life moments. The Red Cross operates an around-the-clock, around-the-world emergency communications network for the men and women of the Armed Forces and their families.
- Provides the Lifeline Program in Clinton and Essex Counties which allows thousands of seniors and individuals with disabilities to stay in their own homes with added security and independence. Currently the Chapter has 240 subscribers.
- Administers the Clinton County Emergency Fuel Fund by providing families in need with a few gallons of kerosene to bridge until other social service agencies can provide further assistance.
- Administers Project Share and Care and Project Share for New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) and National Grid. These programs assist seniors and disable individuals with a small grant during an energy emergency when all other resources have been exhausted.
- Through International Tracing, works in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross and more than 180 national societies, to locate loved ones who are missing due to war, natural disaster or civil unrest and sends messages between separated family members.
